The Reluctant and Struggling Reader

Today I will be sharing tips on identifying 2 groups of children when teaching your child read.

The first group is the Reluctant Reader. He is the child that knows how to read but doesn't like reading. For them reading is boring and this is commonly found among boys. To help them is by giving them books that catches their interest like comics, adventure stories, books about computer games and dinosaurs.

The second group is where I'm concerned and they are the struggling readers. They are the children that struggles to read and are the children that are being misunderstood at home and in school.

They struggle for many reasons like

1: finding it hard to sit still and concentrate.

2:  They may have speech and language difficulty or a history of hearing loss.

3: They may be in their early stages of learning English.

4: There may be a history of reading and spelling difficulties in the family like being dyslexic. Research has shown that literacy can difficulty can be hereditary when linked to dyslexia.

5: Take turns to read with the child and observe the 5 fingers rule which states that the child should put up a finger each time he comes across a difficult word. When the child has used up all the 5 fingers then you know that the book is too difficult for the child to read.

6: Build the child's confidence by praising him for every new word he pronounces well.

7: For younger children teach the child the Phonics behind the words.

8: In school the teacher should spend an extra period to teach the child or address his difficulties

9: Parents are encouraged to be involved in their children learning development by helping to reinforce topics and practices.

10: Assess the child to find out if he's dyslexic by carrying out the 3 magic rules which are COMBINATION, RECURRENCE and PERSISTENCE.

In our next episode I will tell you how to use these 3 magic rules and other assessment methods.
